Area-51 m15x

Arena Magazine January 2009

Fact: PC games are good. Your Xbox 360 or playstation 3 can handle blockbuster action games or put you behind the wheel of a Ferrari, but can it deliever an online experience as rich as World of Warcraft? A cosmic simulation as mind-boggling as Spare? Or a 3D shooter as eerily lifelike as Crysis Warhead? No. The problem is the PC you need to play them: 90% of desktops and laptop systems don't have the required performance. The rest are monolithic boxes that look like they have been customised by boy racers and sound like jets taking off.

Alienware's Area-51 m15x is different. Barring the glowing logo on the lid and an illuminated keyboard, it's a discreet silver laptop with a gorgeous 15.4in screen. But, inside the understated exterior beats the heart of a monster. The Intel Core 2 Extreme processor and nVidia graphics chip will chew through any game you throw at them. Where Crysis Warhead's lush jungle scenery and explosive combat leaves other laptops trembling, the m15x makes it look like a remake of 80's favourite, Predator, only with you not Arnie, in the starring role. This it does with a whisper, not a roar, and it neatly folds away when you've finished with your play. While expenisive- for a high- end model the m15x is the best gaming laptop we've ever seen. Plus, if you don't want to admit that you spend your evenings blasting zombies in left 4 dead, you can always pretend you're catching up on work.
